Java Backend Developer

About the role

ASM Tech Solutions is hiring a Java Backend Developer for a contract engagement in Sunnyvale, CA. You will design and build scalable Java backend services, microservices, and REST APIs for enterprise-scale retail technology. The role requires strong system design, distributed systems, and performance engineering experience.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain high-performance Java backend services and microservices.
• Architect and implement RESTful APIs for web, mobile, and internal service clients.
• Apply data structures and algorithms to solve complex engineering problems efficiently.
• Participate in system design discussions and translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
• Build and manage microservices using Spring Boot and Spring Cloud.
• Improve availability, fault tolerance, and performance across distributed systems.
• Conduct code reviews, mentor junior developers, and uphold engineering best practices.
• Collaborate with frontend, data, DevOps, and product teams in an Agile environment.
• Improve CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and deployment strategies.
• Monitor system health, diagnose bottlenecks, and implement performance tuning.

Required qualifications

• 8+ years of professional backend development experience with strong Java 11+ expertise.
• Strong knowledge of data structures and algorithms, including time and space complexity analysis.
• Strong system design experience with large-scale distributed systems, caching, load balancing, database sharding, and message queuing.
• Hands-on experience building and deploying microservices, including service discovery, circuit breakers, API gateways, and event-driven communication.
• Proficiency designing and consuming REST APIs, including versioning, OAuth2/JWT authentication, rate limiting, and Swagger/OpenAPI documentation.
• Experience with Spring Boot, Spring MVC, and Spring Security.
• Working knowledge of relational databases such as MySQL or PostgreSQL and NoSQL databases such as Cassandra, MongoDB, or Redis.
• Experience with messaging platforms such as Kafka or RabbitMQ.
• Proficiency with Git, Maven or Gradle, and standard SDLC tooling.
• Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
• Must be authorized to work in the United States without visa sponsorship.

Nice to have

• Production experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure.
• Familiarity with GraphQL or gRPC.
• Experience with large-scale retail, e-commerce, or fintech backend systems.
• Knowledge of Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk, or Datadog.
• Experience with Terraform or Helm and understanding of distributed-systems security practices.

Engagement details

• Contract compensation is $60–$65 per hour USD.
• Hybrid/on-site engagement in Sunnyvale, CA.
